State Road 11 closing Monday for work in Seymour

State Road 11 will be closing in downtown Seymour next week as crews work on railroad tracks.

According to the Indiana Department of Transportation, CSX Railroad has announced that it will be closing State Road 11 and Broadway Street starting on Monday while crews improve the railroad crossing there. The road sill close between Second Street and U.S. 50 through Wednesday, although the work schedule is dependent on the weather.

A detour will take traffic from U.S. 50 to Interstate 65 and then back to State Road 11.

INDOT urges you to slow down, to drive without distractions and to be cautious for worker safety in all work zones.

Inmate arrested again after walking away from work crew

An inmate who allegedly walked away from an Edinburgh work crew has been arrested again.

According to the Indiana Department of Correction, Marion Jaynes is serving a 20 year sentence for burglary at the Edinburgh Correctional Facility. Authorities issued a request yesterday afternoon for the public’s help in finding him after he escaped. They said he was driving a blue Dodge Dakota in Indianapolis yesterday morning.

Jaynes was taken into custody by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department at a home shortly before 3:30 p.m. yesterday afternoon.

The Edinburgh Correctional Facility is a minimum security facility located at Camp Atterbury. The facility has work crews multiple areas.

Other agencies assisting in the search include the Johnson and Morgan county sheriff’s departments, Franklin and Mooresville police and the Indiana State Police.

The Johnson County prosecutor will decide on any additional charges.

Update: Missing Seymour girl has been found

The missing Seymour girl has been located. The Seymour Police are thanking all those who assisted in the search.

The Seymour Police Department is requesting your help finding a missing 10-year-old girl.

Peyton Miller, was last seen walking northbound from the Seymour Middle School at approximately 3:45 p.m. Monday. She was wearing a blue coat, pink pants, grey and yellow shoes, with a purple backpack.

Anyone with any information regarding Peyton’s whereabouts should contact Seymour Dispatch at 812-522-1234.

Marion Jaynes was taken into custody by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department shortly before 3:30 p.m. The Johnson County prosecutor will decide on any additional charges.

The Indiana Department of Correction is searching for an incarcerated individual who walked away from a work crew at Edinburgh Correctional Facility.

Marion Jaynes, IDOC #912328, was last seen driving a 2006 blue Dodge Dakota, with license plate TK699MLU just before 11 a.m. Monday near Harding and Lambert streets in Indianapolis.

Jaynes is currently serving a 20-year sentence for burglary at Edinburgh Correctional Facility. The Edinburgh Correctional Facility is a minimum security facility located on the grounds of Camp Atterbury with work crews that work in multiple areas.

IDOC is being assisted by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, Franklin Police, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Mooresville Police Department, and Indiana State Police.

If anyone sees Marion Jaynes, or the vehicle, do not attempt to make contact, please police immediately.

Wanted man arrested after standoff with Columbus police

A wanted man was arrested on Saturday in Columbus after a standoff with the SWAT team.

According to the Columbus Police Department, officers tried to serve an arrest warrant at a home in the 1500 block of Lafayette Avenue at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon. 31-year-old Randy H. Wilson was wanted on a parole warrant on a charge of criminal confinement. Wilson has a long criminal history, police say.

But as police approached the home, they could hear a man’s voice and smell marijuana. 44-year-old Heather R. Clarkson opened the door and officers say the smell of marijuana got even stronger.

After a search warrant was issued and after calling up the SWAT team and Crisis Negotiation Team, Wilson surrendered to police at about 9 p.m. in the evening.

Wilson was arrested on the outstanding warrant and Clarkson was arrested on a charge of possession of marijuana.

Retired BCSO K9 Bravo Passes Away

The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office announced Saturday that one of its retired K9s passed away last week.

Sheriff Chris Lane said that K9 deputy Bravo passed away peacefully on Wednesday October 25th with his handler and family by his side.

Bravo’s handler, retired Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Deputy, Leah Burton, expressed her appreciation to the community by saying, “I want to thank the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office and the citizens of Bartholomew County, as I would not have been blessed to have this amazing partner by my side without you. Rest easy, Bravo. We thank you for your service.”

Family of Four Displaced After Friday Fire

A family of four is displaced from their home after a fire Friday afternoon.
The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office said that State Road 11 (Jonesville Road) was closed in the 14000 block for much of Friday afternoon and evening because of a structure fire.

The family of four, who were not home at the time of the fire, is said to have lost almost everything.

The mother, father, and two girls, ages 8 and 13, all need clothing and toiletry items. Donations for the family are being accepted at the Ogilville Christian Church and Mt. Healthy Elementary School.

The investigation into the fire is ongoing.

Pence drops out of presidential race

Former Vice President and Columbus native Mike Pence is dropping out of the 2024 presidential race.

Pence made the unexpected announcement during his speech at the Republican Jewish Coalition in Las Vegas on Saturday.  He told the stunned audience “This is not my time.”

His latest campaign filing showed 600-thousand dollars in debt and only one-point-two million in cash on hand.  The campaign was also unable to gain the 70-thousand individual donors needed to qualify for the next GOP primary debate.

Pence has represented his hometown in Congress, as well as served as Indiana governor before being tapped to be Donald Trump’s running mate.

Pence did not endorse any other candidates during his announcement.

Trump spoke at a campaign event in Las Vegas Saturday night hours after Pence made his surprise announcement, saying Pence should endorse him.

2 Arrested After JNET Investigation

A long-term investigation by the Bartholomew County Joint Narcotics Enforcement Team led to two arrests last week.

According to the Columbus Police Department, the team had received tips that 51-year-old Robert D. Zambrano of Columbus was dealing narcotics out of his home on Ross Street. A search warrant was served on Wednesday and police seized nearly three ounces of methamphetamine, and over three ounces of marijuana along with packaging material, a digital scale, and a large amount of drug paraphernalia.

Zambrano and 34-year-old Ashley N. Gibson, who was staying with Zambrano, were taken into custody.

Zambrano is facing charges of Dealing in Methamphetamine, Maintaining a Common Nuisance, Dealing in Marijuana, and Possession of Paraphernalia.

Gibson is accused of Possession of Methamphetamine, Maintaining a Common Nuisance, and Possession of Paraphernalia.

The Joint Narcotics Enforcement Team is  a combined unit of the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office, the Columbus Police Department, and the Bartholomew County Prosecutor’s Office that targets the manufacturing and abuse of dangerous drugs in Columbus and Bartholomew County.

 

Mayor Jim Lienhoop Gives $1 Million Dollar Check to BCSC

Columbus Mayor Jim Lienhoop stopped by to drop off a $1,000,000 check that the Columbus Redevelopment Commission has invested in BCSC through a workforce development grant, earlier this week.

The school corporation thanked the City of Columbus for partnering with it to help support i-GRAD, STEM, and Transition programming preparing students for life after high school.
