Three arrested after gun incident at apartments

Three people were arrested Sunday at a Columbus apartment complex after a man allegedly brandished a firearm.

Columbus police were called to the Arbors at Water’s Edge apartments in the 4000 block of County Road 150W at about 3:25 Sunday afternoon after receiving reports of a man pointing a gun. Several people were outside when officers arrived and after an investigation, they uncovered an AR-15 style pistol inside of a car, and a 9mm pistol inside another vehicle. That gun had been reported stolen.

18-year-old Jordan D. May of Columbus was arrested on preliminary charges of Pointing a Firearm, Possession of a Stolen Firearm and Possession of a Handgun without a License. 18-year-old Devinion Fuller of Edinburgh was arrested for Possession of a Handgun without a Permit and Possession of Marijuana.

20-year-old Jacob Hamm of Columbus was also arrested after it was found he had an outstanding Bartholomew County warrant.

Edinburgh police find drugs, gun during traffic stop

A traffic violation led to the arrest of a man on drug and weapon charges over the weekend.

Edinburgh police reported on Saturday that they stopped a vehicle and with assistance of a Johnson County police dog, they found 208 grams of methamphetamine and a handgun inside.

31-year-old Corey Spears was arrested on preliminary charges of dealing methamphetamine and for possession of a handgun without a license by a convicted felon.

Blood donors needed as Red Cross sees shortages

The American Red Cross is looking for your help as the agency is reporting a severe blood shortage.

Donors of all blood types – especially type O and those giving platelets – are being urged to make an appointment to give now to help ensure hospitals have the blood supplies they need. The Red Cross has had less than 1/2 a day supply of type O blood in recent weeks, the blood group most needed by hospitals.

In Columbus, the Red Cross will be taking donations from 1 to 6 p.m., today at the First Christian Church Youth Center, on Fifth Street, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at the Toyota Recreational Center gym on Inwood Drive.

Crews to close Jackson County bridge starting today

Contractors are scheduled to close a State Road 135 bridge over Little Salt Creek in Jackson County for up to 3 months, starting today. INDOT says that the bridge will be closed for a resurfacing project about five miles north of State Road 58.

The official detour will follow State Road 46 to Interstate 65 to State Road 58.

E&B Paving Inc. is the contractor for the $2.3 million dollar project which includes several bridge repairs. On Friday, the State Road 135 bridge over Kiper Creek reopened after a superstructure replacement project as part of the same contract. That bridge had been closed since March.

INDOT reminds you to slow down, to use extra caution and to drive without distractions in all work zones. The work depends on the weather and schedules are subject to change.

Applications available online for Lilly Endowment scholarships

Applications are now available online for next year’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships in Bartholomew County, through Heritage Fund – The Community Foundation of Bartholomew County.

Two students will be chosen for the scholarships, which pay full tuition and required fees for four years of full-time undergraduate study that lead to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university.

To apply, you must live in Bartholomew County; be on course to graduate by the end of June  with at least a 3.5 GPA and demonstrate significant school involvement, community service, good character, leadership skills and financial need.

Applications and all required materials must be submitted by 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2nd.

Our Hospice golf tourney raises more than $25k

Our Hospice of South Central Indaina is reporting that last month’s 27th Annual Decatur Golf Tournament raised more than $25,600.

21 teams and 84 golfers supported the annual fundraiser on June 18th to benefit patients and families in the Decatur County service area. The winning team members in this year’s tournament included David McCullough, Kennedy McCullough, Keegan McCullough and Lucas Williams.

Hospice officials say the tournament has raised more than $672,000 over the past 27 years.

Organizers also honored long-time volunteer and golf committee member Al Knecht before the tournament start.

County Road 200S closing for paving project

Part of Bartholomew County Road 200S will be closing next week for road paving.

The city engineer’s office says that contractors will be milling and paving from the city limits on the west to about 300 feet west of Interstate 65. That means the road will be closed from Catalina Drive to Red Fox Trail, including the intersection with Terrace Lake Road. Residents on 200S and Catalina Court will be given limited access to reach their homes.

The work will start on Tuesday and run through Friday, July 16th weather permitting.

All Star Paving is the contractor for the work and the funding comes from the Indiana Community Crossing matching grant program.

Midnight Madness on Midway at Bartholomew County 4-H Fair tonight

The Bartholomew County 4-H Fair continues today with Sombra Industries day at the fair.

Activities today include 4-H Supreme Showmanship and Livestock awards at the Pavilion, the Good Time Review at David Boll Theatre, Family Fun Night and the Indiana Pulling League at the Grandstands.

The Midway opens at 5 p.m. with regular pricing until 8 p.m., then Midnight Madness starts with $18 wristbands.

Man accused of intimidation after threats with knife

A Columbus man was arrested Wednesday night, accused of using a large knife to threaten a crew cleaning out a nearby flooded apartment.

Columbus police officers were called to the 2700 block of Williamsburgh Court at shortly before 10:30 p.m. Wednesday night. Two men cleaning the apartment said that a suspect had threatened them with a large knife, saying that they were making too much noise.

Police soon found 49-year-old Robert M. Shoup who lives in the apartment building. Officers also recovered a large knife on Shoup. Shoup was given a portable breath test and blew a .338 percent blood alcohol level.

He was first taken to Columbus Regional Hospital to be checked out and then arrested on a felony charge of intimidation with a deadly weapon.
