Bridge Deck Overlay on I-65 Near Edinburgh

Indiana Department of Transportation contractor HIS Constructors plans to close County Line Road (County Road 800E) over I-65 near Edinburgh starting today, to complete a bridge deck overlay project.

The bridge was rehabbed last year, but is being redone due to material difficulties.

The bridge is scheduled to close for approximately four weeks, through late June, with a detour that follows County Road 650S, County Road 700E and County Road 400 S.

Free Legal Aid Phone Clinic Coming Up

Legal Aid will have a free Legal Aid Phone Clinic for residents of its eight county district on June 7th.

The district includes Bartholomew, Brown, Decatur, Jackson, Jennings, Johnson, Rush, and Shelby counties.

The phone clinic will be from 3:00 – 5:30 p.m. though registration is required between Noon – 2:00 p.m.

The clinic utilizes local volunteer attorneys, offering free legal consultations to low-income individuals who might not otherwise be able to afford an attorney.

Individuals can expect to receive a brief consultation to answer general questions, offer legal information, or to receive other limited advice, over the phone. Individuals seeking legal consultation must register by calling 812-378-0358 on June 7th, between Noon – 2:00 p.m.  A volunteer attorney will return calls to registered individuals between 3:00 – 5:30 p.m.  Individuals must be available to answer a call from an attorney.

Seymour Man in Jail after Allegedly Assaulting Daughter

A  Seymour man has gone to jail after allegedly assaulting his daughter.

Martin Diego Juan, of Seymour, was arrested for sexual battery.

The Seymour Police Department (SPD) received information on May 13th that an 11-year-old female had allegedly been sexually battered by her father.

The victim was then interviewed by detectives and Family Case Managers with the Indiana Department of Child Services.

Police tried to locate Juan, the child’s father, later in the evening, but their attempts were unsuccessful.

Juan was eventually found by SPD on May 20th. He was taken into custody, charged, and transported to Jackson County Jail.

Heritage Fund of Bartholomew County Distributes Funds

Heritage Fund – the Community Foundation of Bartholomew County recently distributed $247,500 from the Community Fund to local nonprofits as part of its fourth-quarter grants cycle.

The grant recipients are Turning Point Domestic Violence Services, $200,000 to support the renovation of a new administration building; Thrive Alliance, $37,500 for office equipment upgrades; and, the Columbus Area Arts Council, $10,000 to support professional development.

Through the generous support of community members, HFBC annually distributes approximately $600,000 to $700,000 in grants to local nonprofit organizations.

 

Kindergarten Enrollment at BCSC

Online enrollment for kindergarten in the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation (BCSC) for the 2022-2023 school year is open now. To be eligible, the child must be five years of age by August 1st, 2022.

To enroll, parents/guardians must present the child’s birth certificate, immunization records, and proof of residency.

For questions, contact the BCSC school your child will attend.

Kindergarten online registration is available by going to the BCSC website..

Flood Watch for South Central Indiana

The National Weather Service in Indianapolis has issued a Flood Watch for several counties in south-central Indiana, including Bartholomew, Jackson, Jennings, Decatur, and Brown. The Flood Watch is in effect through late tonight.

Rain amounts of one to two inches are possible by the end of today.

Residents are advised to monitor local weather reports and be alert for possible Flood Warnings

 

Slow Down on the Roads During Harvest Season

With harvest season arriving, Hoosiers can expect to see more slow-moving agricultural equipment on the roadways. As the roads become more crowded, Indiana State Police (ISP) troopers are asking drivers to be cautious, and share the road this autumn.

Lt. Governor Susanne Crouch encouraged drivers in a statement to slow down and be patient with tractors and combines during the harvest season.Slow Down on the Roads

ISP says the agricultural vehicles are not only wide, but can take up most of the road while traveling at speeds no greater than 25 mph. Drivers are asked to be patient to avoid any unsafe or serious accidents.

Disappearance of Local Man Still Unclear

The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) says a local man has been missing for about three months and there is still not a lot of information as to his whereabouts or why he disappeared.

Andrew W. Albert, of Bartholomew County, was reported as a missing person on August 30th.

He was last seen by his family on June 22nd, in southwestern Bartholomew County.

A tent with some of his belongings was located in Hoosier National Forest, in Brown County, on July 19th.

BCSC to Switch to Virtual Meetings

The Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation (BCSC) Board of Trustees will be switching to virtual meetings due to threatening behavior at past meetings.

The Board released a statement late Wednesday afternoon about its upcoming meeting on Monday, at 6:30 p.m.

The statement read, “Due to a number of unfortunate factors, the BCSC Board will conduct its next meeting and public hearing on the proposed 2022 budget, virtually. This change is driven by episodes of threatening behavior at prior meetings including, profanities, personal attacks, non-compliance to meeting protocols such as physical distancing, wearing masks, etc., and interference with the ability to conduct necessary business.”

The meeting will be live-streamed and you can view it by subscribing to the BCSC YouTube channel.

BCSC will continue to offer an opportunity for public comment for its regular meeting.

Drive Thru Vaccine Clinics in Columbus

Franciscan Health Immunization Services is offering a couple of drive-thru flu clinics in Columbus in the near future.

Clinics will be held at Franciscan Physician Network Columbus Primary and Specialty Care, 123 Second St., Columbus, TODAY from 3 to 6 p.m. and again on Monday, Oct. 18th, from 3 to 6 p.m.

Multiple types of vaccines will be available including: Flu, Covid-19, and shingles.

Participants should bring their insurance cards to avoid other charges and dress appropriately to ease administration of the vaccines.

Only patients 6 months and older can be seen.
