Concrete patching to close Interstate 65 exit lane

INDOT contractors will be concrete patching at the State Road 46 interchange with Interstate 65 in Columbus this weekend.

According to the state, Force Construction crews will be starting on the exit ramp from Interstate 65 northbound to westbound State Road 46 and the left lane on the ramp will be closed starting on Sunday. The work is expected to be finished by Thursday. The work schedule is dependent on the weather.

INDOT says that the patching work will effect the traffic signals at the interchange. Instead of using the loop sensors in the pavement, the signals will be placed on timers while the work is ongoing. You should expect some delays.

There will be more ramp restrictions in the coming weeks and you can check back for updates once the schedule is finalized.

The work is all part of the project adding travel lanes on Interstate 65.

INDOT reminds you to slow down, to use caution and to be alert to worker’s safety in all construction zones.

Jennings deputy to be stationed at Country Squire Lakes

Jennings County Sheriff’s Department will be assigning a deputy full-time to the Country Squire Lakes neighborhood.

The Sheriff’s Department announced this week that the Jennings County Council had approved the plan for the position, with most of the funding coming from the neighborhood. Country Squire Lakes would cover the cost of the deputy’s salary, fuel and also a small amount to cover benefit such as insurance. The council agreed to cover other costs.

Sheriff Kenny Freeman said that while 12 percent of the county population lives in the neighborhood, 17 percent of the county’s emergency calls come from there. He said that Country Squire Lakes management plans to have a public safety building built inside of CSL to house fire suppression equipment and a law enforcement office.

Freeman said the new position will allow a deputy “to focus on CSL as their primary patrol and to have a better response time in the event of emergencies…” It will also free up other deputies for the rest of the county, Freeman said.

Freeman said that Deputy John Hartman will assigned to the neighborhood. Other deputies will also continue their patrol and response within Country Squire Lakes.

Columbus firefighters training near Central Avenue

You could see Columbus firefighters in action through Saturday near 21st Street and Central Avenue. But they are using a residential structure for training, not battling an actual fire.

Capt. Mike Wilson spokesman for the department, says that the training will be happening both inside and outside the building. They will be training on forcible entries, search and rescue and ventilation techniques. There will be a smoke generation machine active at times, but no actual fire is being used for any portion of the training.

If you are in the area, Wilson asks you to use caution while the training is going on.
