Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman, says that officers were called to the 200 block of Smith Street at 3:40 p.m. where a man told them that he stopped to visit a friend when he was confronted by 36-year-old Dirk C. Neal. The man explained that he is blind in one eye and says that Neal threatened to damage his other eye with a screwdriver. Neal allegedly swung the screwdriver at the man’s head and missed before knocking him to the ground. The alleged victim told officers that he was able to fight off Neal by swinging a bike lock at him. Harris says that officers found Neal a short time later and arrested him.

Neal is being held for 48 hours on preliminary charges of Battery and Intimidation with a Deadly Weapon. Police aren’t saying what led to the confrontation.
