A traffic stop for an expired license plate ended with a drug arrest over the weekend in Jennings County.

The North Vernon Police Department reports that officers noticed an expired plate on a vehicle at almost 7:50 Saturday night and when the driver was pulled over, the officer smelled marijuana in the vehicle. The driver, 52-year-old Ricky Daugherty of Taswell, Ind. admitted to having a small amount of marijuana which was taken by police. A search allegedly revealed a larger amount of marijuana in his pocket and when Daugherty was searched at the jail, officers allegedly found several types of prescription-only pain medication.

Daugherty is facing preliminary charges of trafficking with an inmate, a legend drug violation, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
