BCSC candidates discuss anti-bullying measures

All three of the open seats on the Bartholomew Consolidated School Board are being contested in tomorrow’s election.

We asked the six candidates running for the BCSC board:

  • Is the issue of bullying being handled correctly in BCSC schools? Are there enough resources and attention devoted to preventing bullying?

In BCSC District 3, incumbent Polly Verbanic is facing challenger James Persinger.

Verbanic said the district is doing a good job.

Persinger says that many people shift between being the bully and being the victim.

Incumbent Pat Bryant is facing Tim Woods in BCSC District 5

Bryant said that he thinks the biggest problem is people choosing not to report incidents of bullying.

Woods said that he thinks schools are addressing bullying in venues ranging from school property to social media:

In District 7, board member Jeff Caldwell is running against Dennis White.

Caldwell said that bullying is an easy issue for the board to set policy on, but harder for school staff to deal with.

White said that fighting bullying is something people deal with throughout their life.
