Election officials: Once ballot is cast, vote is final

Misinformation is being spread in Indiana about whether you can reconsider your vote, if you cast an early vote. Bartholomew County Clerk Jay Phelps says you cannot.

A news report we ran yesterday out of Marion County suggested that you could pull back your ballot as long as election day hasn’t passed but that is incorrect, Phelps says. He has guidance from the state election board attorney that says that previously might have been allowed but the law changed in 2011.

Phelps says that once the voter has cast their ballot on the machine or by the mail and voting officials have received that ballot, there is no turning back. The voter registration office has received several calls about this issue, Phelps said.

He says that once a ballot is cast or received by mail, it is final.
