Trooper hit by car during marathon

An Indiana State Police trooper directing traffic during Saturday’s Mill Race Marathon in Columbus was hit by a car and slightly injured.

The accident happened at 8:19 a.m. at State and Mapleton streets, when a car driven by 64-year-old Sherry S. Waggoner struck 1st Sgt. Perry Hewitt when she tried to turn north onto Mapleton. Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, spokesman for the state police, says that Hewitt’s legs were injured in the accident and he was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital where he was treated and released.

Investigators believe that Waggoner’s view may have been obstructed by the sunlight.

Hewitt, a 36-year-veteran of the agency, works out the headquarters division in Indianapolis and was one of the troopers from around the state assisting in Saturday’s marathon.
